Focused Graduation Pathway

Focused Graduation Pathway

The Focused Graduation Pathway (FGP) provides an alternative route to graduation for students who are significantly behind in high school credits.  The program allows students to earn a high school diploma by passing General Education Development (GED) exams in four subject areas: Reasoning Through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies and utilizing those exams to earn credits.  Students participating in the FGP do not have to withdraw from K-12 to take the exams.

To participate, schools must develop policies, obtain approval from their Local Education Agency (LEA) board, and designate an FGP Coordinator. Students must meet specific eligibility criteria, including being significantly behind in credits and demonstrating a 9th-grade reading level. School programs should ensure that students receive necessary support to experience success, including subject area experts and accommodations for disabilities.

Upon successful completion of the GED exams and all LEA graduation requirements, students are awarded a traditional high school diploma and may participate in graduation ceremonies.
